Does a hair transplant damage existing hair?
Hair transplant is a sophisticated procedure that requires expertise. The good thing is that technological advancements have helped improve the success rate of hair transplants, which is around 98%. However, one myth that still stands tall over the success ratio is that hair transplants can damage your natural hair.
Well, the truth is that hair transplants cannot damage your natural hair. You may witness falling off of some natural hair around the treated site, but that’s not damaged, and that’s only a temporary side effect.

Why does natural hair around the hair transplant site fall?

The primary reason behind the falling of natural hair is altered blood circulation. During the hair transplant, your surgeon will remove hair follicles from the healthy site and graft them to the recipient site
For this, the surgeon will use a needle to make tiny holes in your scalp. This can alter the blood circulation, resulting in hair fall.
Another reason behind the hair fall is post-surgery trauma. Trauma can cause natural hairs to shed temporarily, and only the upper part of the hair falls in both cases, dermal papilla and the cells underneath the hair follicles. Hence, the natural hairs grow back after temporary shedding.

Factors that can cause damage to natural hairs

While hair transplant itself does not damage natural hair, some factors can, the primary being the surgeon’s expertise. Since hair transplant is complicated, the surgeon you choose should be highly experienced. Another primary reason to damage natural hair is not following the recovery guidelines.
After the surgery, the doctor will ask you to follow certain guidelines, such as not combing your hair for a few days or not applying dye. However, if you don’t follow the recovery guideline, there are chances of damage to the natural and transplanted hair.
